The Popdust Files: eddie vedder, Raffi, RIP

Sad news for lovers of giant mammals and ’80s children’s songs: The Vancouver Aquarium reported the death of Kavna, their resident beluga whale on Tuesday, with early evaluation citing lesions generally associated with cancer. At 46-years-old, Kavna was the oldest living beluga in any accredited North American aquarium, greatly outliving the typical 25 to 30 year lifespan associated with her species in the wild. But perhaps she was mostly widely known for inspiring the iconic birthday party sing-along song, “Baby Beluga,” by children’s entertainer, Raffi.

Legend goes that the pair’s meeting in 1979 led Raffi (full name Raffi Cavoukian) to create a fictional musical story about a similarly awesome creature. As expected, the news has been difficult on the performer.

But don’t think that just because Kavna is gone, “Baby Beluga” is no longer acceptable music for kids’ birthday parties, karaoke nights, or the privacy of your own bedroom:

While Raffi’s version is the one my parents used to entertain me with while they hosted noisy parties downstairs, there are a few other notable renditions from people you might not expect.

Of course Michelle Tanner loved Raffi. And sorry, Steph. We still like your “Motown Philly” dance routine the best.

I can’t believe it either! The Pearl Jam singer performed the first verse during the Bridge School Benefit in Mountain View, Calif. in 2004.

But no tribute to Kavna would be complete without showing you something entitled “Baby Beluga Rap” by Where’s The Beef?

RIP Kavna. Swim so wild and you swim so free.
