The Popdust Files: justin bieber, olympics

Among his many roles—singer, songwriter, dancer, swag possessor—Justin Bieber is also an avid sports fan. And like any citizen of the world with a beating pulse and a bleeding heart, he’s been following the 2012 Olympics, particularly enthralled by the last-minute drama at the women’s gymnastics qualifying round Sunday night. Team Canada narrowly made it into the Top 8, advancing to the final round of competition on Tuesday. Bieber’s never been shy about the pride he feels for his home country—or his use of Twitter—and sent congratulations to star Dominique Pegg. What came next elicited the envy of teammates, classmates, moms, and probably security guards, while making a case for Canadian world domination all at the same time:

And none for Jordyn Wieber, bye. Watch your back, Team USA, Canada goes hard. But that’s not all! A diplomatic fan of friendly competition, Bieber tuned in to see American swimmer Missy Franklin take gold on in the women’s 100m backstroke on Monday, sending kind words to the 17-year-old that are almost as sweet as a first-place medal—or at least will carry more social currency at school next fall.

Pegg and Team Canada compete in the women’s team gymnastics final airing tonight on NBC, while Franklin swims in the 200 freestyle, as well as the 100 freestyle and 200 backstroke later in the week. In the meantime, start practicing your events now, Beliebers. Securing a spot on your country’s Olympic roster is apparently the best way to receive those coveted tweets from The Bieb.
