Last night’s Teen Choice awards had everything: the Twilight crew, Bieber, a Hemsworth, lots of Demi Lovato, a performance of “Call Me Maybe” and Rhode Island’s finest, DJ Pauly D. If you could hermetically seal the entire thing, bury it in the ground and a few years from now, dig it up, you’d have a relic from a very, very specific 15 minutes of our pop-culture history.
And sure, the awards are important (you’re not anyone in Hollywood until you’ve got a big, colorful Teen Choice surfboard hanging from your wall, right?), but let’s take a moment to talk about how everyone looked.
There were five big trends that we took note of last night, trends that literally anyone can try at home. They are, in no particular order (drum roll, please): fit-and-flare dresses, really bright colors, metallics, crazy prints, and corsets. Honorable mention goes out to host Demi Lovato, whose pink carpet dress incorporated both metallics and bright colors as well as feathers and what appeared to be detachable shoulder pads.
This might be the look we’re most excited by, because it’s flattering on many different body types. You’ll note that every single one of these styles makes its wearer’s waist look teensy; it’s partly an illusion caused by the full skirt, and partly because damn these girls are skinny.
Corsets may sound intense, but the ones seen here are a bit more sophisticated than the lace-up versions you’d find at a trashy lingerie store. With a top half this figure-conscious, it’s best to go a little more loose on bottom. You know, so you can breathe, and eat, and sit.
Nothing says rock star like lots of gold or silver accents, or both, as Justin Bieber demonstrates with silver-coated denim and superhero-style gold arm cuffs and gloves. He’s the leader of a space dance army, and he’s got the moves and the decorative armor to prove it.
This is, perhaps more than anyone else, Carly Rae Jepsen’s evening and she came out sporting one of the biggest trends of 2012: bold prints. The queen of the summer jam wore a palm-tree printed blazer and matching mini. It was one of the night’s more memorable looks, though she was in good company.

When in doubt, go bright seemed to be the motto of many young Hollywood types. It worked; they all looked pretty fantastic. At this point it should be noted that we are at a time and a place where neon yellow is apparently a fail-safe choice for a formal occasion. Ponder that.
