Azealia Banks and Beetlejuice, Plus 7 More Fashion Homages to the ’90s
In case you haven’t been invited to any super-secret underground raves lately, we’ve got some good news: It’s officially acceptable to dress like it’s 1995 all over again. To complete your own retro makeover, here’s a quick checklist: lip-liner, platform sneakers, tattoo chokers, and Google Image search. From reigning queens like Lady Gaga and Nicki Minaj to rising gothlets like Natalia Kills and Sky Ferreira, the fashion-forward women of pop all have their ’90s touchstones, whether they’d care to admit or not (some were barely even born then!). Below, today’s trendsetters and their Clinton-era doppelgangers.
RITA ORA / SCARY SPICE
Dear Scary Spice circa ’97: We miss you! Apparently, so does Rita Ora, who recently paid homage, whether she knows it or not, to who we are assuming is her favorite Spice Girl recently at the Wireless Festival in London.
NICKI MINAJ / LIL’ KIM
Okay, yes, we went there. But before you start throwing “Oh no she didn’t”s this way, we DARE you to squint your eyes and tell us Nicki Minaj (last week) doesn’t look like she raided the 1999/2000 section of Lil Kim’s probably very pink walk-in closet. A glossy lip. Superhero/super-dyed hair. Bananas colored snakeskin. Told ya so.
CHARLI XCX / KELLY BUNDY
As of late, our obsession with British pop crooner Charli XCX has reached troubling levels due to her fantastic Carine Roitfeld-styled V magazine cover shoot. Charli glams it up for big-time shoots, but her personal style is more like a gothic My So Called Life‘s-Angela-Chase-meets-
AZEALIA BANKS / BEETLEJUICE
Azealia Banks’ blogged-about Coachella look basically = the body-con/midriff-baring version of Beetlejuice’s iconic white-and-black tuxedo.
LADY GAGA / ROSIE O’DONNELL
Lady Gaga recently did karaoke in Japan and looked kind of crazy albeit in a beautiful killer way, as Gaga does. And Terry Richardson documented it. Whether she acted out her inner Chloe Sevigny in Party Monster/Kids is TBD. As for her potentially being mistaken for the lace-and-leather clad Rosie O’Donnell (!!!!) in the massively maligned ’94 dud Exit to Eden? Worse things have happened.
NATALIA KILLS / EN VOGUE
Natalia Kills, whose favorite designer is downtown’s reigning designer prince, Alexander Wang, perpetually glams it up in lots of black, leather and skyscraper heels. In a recent photo-shoot, the drop-dead gorgeous singer was on a mission to paint the rave floor black: She worked a braided towering pony; black, black, black; and piled on gilded bling. Before you get all “Madonna Blonde Ambition ponytail!!!” on us, let us remind you of the perfection that is En Vogue, specifically 1992′s S&M-on-a-catwalk music video for “Free Your Mind.”
SKY FERREIRA / SABRINA THE TEENAGE WITCH
Sky Ferreira is not letting go of the It Girl crown. See: current cover co-star of V magazine, working with Garbage’s Shirley Manson on her forthcoming debut LP, and innumerable images of her pouting prettily for Terry Richardon’s Tumblr. Sky may cite Courtney Love as a personal style icon, but with her tattoo choker, a.k.a. the ultimate ’90s accessory, we immediately think of Melissa Joan Hart. Clarissa Explains It All/Sabrina the Teenage Witch forever, you guys.
JESSIE J / BRITNEY SPEARS
Incredibly important question: Did Jessie J take style inspiration for her sporty look at the Barclaycard Wireless festival from her hit “Do It Like a Dude?” Possibly. Or maybe she was inspired by the ultimate midriff super fan, Ms. Britney Spears circa 2000. For the weekend rave, we suggest grabbing the crimper and a sparkling belly button ring, JJ.
