The Popdust Files: fun, music videos, some nights
Fun. promised us a war, and by golly, they delivered a war. A real war, with bayonets and barns and Instagrammy video filters and slo-mo and everything. The stylized kind, in other words — war as atmosphere — which explains how fun. can do the entire song at a distance of what looks like maybe a couple yards or so from the front lines. If you’re going for lyrics like “This is it, boys — this is war…. what do I stand for?” and “I still see your ghost, oh Lord” and you want them to sound meaningful, not just overblown, might as well do it in the setting of an actual war, or at least someplace theatrically close enough, with red smoke and torches and guitars that look like they’ve just been manufactured by hand. If you’re supposed to be representing rock, you’ve got to have the aesthetics.
