The Popdust Files: Call My Name, calvin harris, cheryl cole, upcoming albums

Just because it happens to be April 20, doesn’t mean every song we recommend today has to be even tangentially related to marijuana. How about some new Cheryl Cole music to start your weekend? We’ve wanted good things for the ex-Girls Aloud member ever since Simon unceremoniously dropped her from his American X Factor plans, only after she filmed a few auditions rounds. Of the rumors upon rumors regarding her third solo album, A Million Lights, we were most intrigued by the (most plausible) idea of Cole teaming up with Calvin Harris. The Scottish DJ makes a good accompaniment to female pop stars, and if “We Found Love” is any indication, can take the beauty of an existing falsetto and turn it into an inescapable success. Harris lent his touch to ”Call My Name,” the album’s lead single—proof that “Call“ may very well be the “Swagger/Jagger” of 2012—and a sprinkling dance number that’s a lot more energetic than 2008′s ”Fight For This Love,” which continues to maintain a presence atop our Most Played lists.

Many may assume that lines like “How’d you think I feel when you call my name / You got me confused by the way I change” refer to the fluctuating stance of a fickle boyfriend, but why can’t it be about an egomaniacal employer who’s never satisfied? We’re probably reading too much into things, but a loose case can be made for this all being about Cowell and X Factor and her failure to break through in the States on the back of a reality show that didn’t do much of that either. You’re better off, Chezza! In other news: X Factor will never leave our minds ever. Those album rumors delivered empty promises on the will.i.am involvement, as there’s no lead Pea to be heard—not that we’re necessarily complaining. The Geordie deserves three or four minutes of her own to shine. Listen below.
