"Men In Black 3" Theme to Be Performed By…Pitbull?

With news of a upcoming Men In Black sequel to be released this May, we figured it was only a matter of time till we got a new hit theme song to go with it. Some of us here at Popdust still can recite Will Smith’s theme to the original MIB—his first smash away from long-time partner DJ Jazzy Jeff, as you may recall—front to back, and while MIB2 theme “Black Suits Comin’ (Nod Ya Head)” didn’t quite have the same radio-saturating effect, it was still big enough to get nominated for a VMA or two. Plus, Will Smith hasn’t had a hit in a minute, and we miss him when he disappears from the radio for half-decades at a time. So it’s a relief to hear that there will in fact be a theme from MIB3 released as a single, and that it will, naturally, be performed by…
Yeah, we get that Pitbull is on every single released by anybody these days, so it makes sense that the MIB producers wouldn’t be able to exclude him from the project entirely. But does this mean that Big Willie Style isn’t gonna be involved with the song at all? Has it been so long since Smith had himself a hit of his own that he’s no longer commercially viable enough to perform the theme song to his own friggin’ movie? Seems nuts, but then again, it’s been seven years (!!!) since “Switch,” and that wasn’t exactly “Gettin’ Jiggy With It” to begin with. Perhaps at age 43, Will’s days as a commercially viable rapper are simply behind him. Sniffle.
At least Pitbull has the decency to pay proper tribute to his predecessor. “It’s an incredible honor to be a part of such an amazing franchise as ‘Men in Black,’” Pitbull said in a statement. “And I have so much respect for Will Smith, especially with our similar musical backgrounds.” (They certainly both have a certain fondness for Miami.) And also to Pit’s credit, the song sounds like it has potential, as the rapper describes it as having “a smooth oldies feel,” and divulges that it samples Mickey & Sylvia’s Dirty Dancing-approved ’50s pop classic “Love is Strange.” Not exactly what we would have guessed for MIB3, but intriguing nonetheless.
We just hope the Fresh Prince at least makes a prominent appearance in the video. You can’t bury the past like this, Hollywood.
