The Only Way is Up: One Direction Possibly Headed Towards Top of US Pop Charts

It’s been a long time since we had a proper boy band on the top of the US charts. N Sync hasn’t had a chart-topping LP since ’01, BSB hasn’t since ’00, and LFO…well, they were never really in the chart-topping business to begin with. Even B2K’s biggest album tapped out at #2. But now, with the endlessly cyclical nature of pop music bringing the all-young-male vocal singing group back into vogue, happy days may in fact be here again for the boy band. Sales projection site HITS Daily Double reports that British group One Direction should sell somewhere between 190k and 210k this week of debut album Up All Night, based on its one-day sales numbers. Considering that Adele sold just 195k this week, and there’s no obvious reason why that number would go up next week, that means 1D should have a pretty good shot at #1.
We’re rooting for Harry, Liam, Louis, Zayn and Niall to get there. Up All Night isn’t a perfect debut by any means, but it has a bunch of exemplary pop songs on there, and we liked it well enough to review every song on it. At the very least, it feels a lot more like a 2012 #1 than Bruuuuuuce does.
