The Popdust Files: blue ivy carter, Glory, jay-z, sxsw

If you weren’t watching the torturous Bachelor finale or studying up on your March Madness picks Monday night, there’s a good chance you may have caught some of Jay-Z South by Southwest show from your couch—that is if the ads that precede YouTube videos had any effect on you in the last week. American Express’ grand experiment to broadcast Jay’s set from SXSW Interactive went off without a noticeable hitch on Monday night, with users sending song requests over Twitter and AmEx’s running tweet tracker highlight reactions from those unable to be in attendance. How many mentions did you catch of the Austin crowd not getting down appropriately? We saw six. Step your game up, tech world!

Hov performed hits from albums like The Blueprint, The Black Album and The Blueprint 3 for the collection of start-up geeks for roughly 80 minutes, but it was his mention of two-month old daughter Blue Ivy that generated the biggest response from the crowd. Yes, “Glory” is a track that will apparently will be performed live. Maybe just in this state of infancy, or maybe for years to come—whatever it is, we’re still too giddy over the thought of Papa Hov and photos like this to really be upset by either one. The second time since his Carnegie Hall live debut last month, Jay shared his bountiful feelings with a performance of “Glory” (19:45), followed by a communal celebration with his fellow moms and dads in the audience. “All the parents in the house make some noise one time,” he said. “That might be the first parent shout-out at a rap show.” And now it’s time to bring it in for a hug. We’ll probably react like this until her wedding day, no?
