The Popdust Files: chris brown
Remember that post a while back, the one about Chris Brown lacking anyone willing to say “no”–as in, no, it’s not a good idea to make another “fuck the haters” track? Let’s extend that. No, it’s not a good idea to make a track called “Fuck the City Up” if you’re Chris Brown, for reasons that should be too obvious to even mention. It’s not a good idea to talk about fucking things up then act incredulous that people might see a second meaning to the phrase. It’s definitely not a good idea to talk about fucking things up as a romantic metaphor.
But once again, Brown has said umpteen times that he doesn’t particularly care what bystanders have to say. Nothing we can say will stop this train. This train is not only rolling down the tracks but about to crash fairly shortly in the form of a no-doubt-provocative Fortune album and undoubtedly life-affirming news cycle. Properly reviewing “Fuck the City Up,” then, would be like shouting at the train from fifty feet away if the conductor’s wearing big fuck-off earplugs.
Anyway, you can listen to the track below if you must, but be warned: even out of context, it’s not great. Drumma Boy’s production is sludgy and the thing goes nowhere. You could also listen to T.I.’s earlier track of the same name, which isn’t fantastic either but does have the benefit of being an alternative, if you want that. And you can argue about all this in the comments if you must, but once again, nobody’s changing anyone’s mind at this point. (I’m not entering the fray, because in half an hour I’ll be at the laundromat. The haters’ laundromat, where we do hateful laundry.)
