Kid Cudi’s WZRD is not going to age well. People are buying it–it’s not a chart-topper, but getting a chart-topper in the Year That’s Still The Year of Adele is a lot to ask–but really now. It’s probably going to be relegated to stray comments like “hey remember that time Kid Rock went prog?” or possibly, buried deep in a music-recommendations thread from 2025: “man, there’s this one prog-rock album by these guys Kid Cudi and Dot da Genius from forever ago that nobody’s heard but I kind of like it, WZRD?” No downvotes, maybe a stray upvote or two, but little more.
I mean, just think on this for a second: “prog-rock side project.” That’s a concept very hard to pull off, in its heyday decades ago and certainly now. And we might be preaching to the choir at this point, but watch this on “Conan.” The groups’s got to be introduced as “W-Z-R-D.” Cudi delivers every line of his track–a track called “Teleport 2 Me, Jamie”–with the clench of deadly seriousness. The lights are set to “ominous.” We’re trying very hard not to joke about this. They might be trying harder.
