The Popdust Files: beyonce, movies, one hit wonders, Ryan Murphy

Ryan Murphy and Gwyneth Paltrow, whom even comparatively staid Deadline points out is practically one of the Glee grownups, are making a movie called One Hit Wonders. That’s either promising or not, largely depending on your stance on Glee and/or one-hit wonders. But a Beyonce starring role? That’s significantly more promising!

The film’s not going to start production until Murphy’s A Normal Heart is finished (and until Beyonce’s ready to work, one imagines), so for now, here’s a cast rundown:

- Beyonce, who is Beyonce. Not much detail on her role besides that.

- Gwyneth Paltrow, Cameron Diaz and Reese Witherspoon, who play three ’90s one-hit wonders who form a supergroup. (Does anyone think this premise would be better executed… during the ’90s? Or at least the early 2000s? When their supergroup would sing alt-rock pastiches that would be amazing? Unless Ryan Murphy’s trying to film a fictionalized Wild Flag. Or unless this has sideplots Music and Lyrics, which was actually OK.)

- Andy Samberg, who as far as we can tell is cast to commission Lonely Island music. No word on whether it’ll be actual Lonely Island music or a less-jokey, more in-character version.

- Hopefully at least one song that’d actually qualify for Best Original Song, because we’re still a tiny bit irritated by the field this year of only two. Here is a template.
