The Popdust Files: Billboard, Call Me Maybe, carly rae jepsen, charts, glad you came, kelly clarkson, stronger, the wanted

Katy Perry’s “Part of Me” crash-landing on the top spot of the Hot 100 unseated Kelly Clarkson from #1 for one week, but Kells was never gonna put up with that for too long. Clarkson karate chops Katy back to #4 this week, while she resumes control of the top spot, the third week total on top for Kelly’s title track. Between the two femmes, Adele holds on to #2 with “Set Fire to the Rain,” while Fun. lands back at #3 with its “We Are Young”—meaning that Fun. currently reside as the bronze finishers on both Billboard’s singles and albums chart. Neato.

Most notable in the top five is the presence of UK boy band The Wanted, with their U.S. debut single “Glad You Came.” The Wante zoom from #23 to #5 this week, on the back of a huge gain in digital sales, largely attributable to the song getting covered by the Glee Cast on last week’s episode. (The Glee Cast rendition is #90 this week.) Does this chart gain signal that boy bands are in again? Well, it’s been a decade since either ‘N Sync or BSB hit the top five, so the time would certainly appear to be right. We’re rooting for ‘em anyway—too many solo freelancers these days. The kids need to learn about team spirit somewhere.

Outside of the top ten, it’s debuts, debuts, debuts this week, including B.o.B. at #11 with “So Good” and Carrie Underwood at #24 with “Good Girl” in those two songs’ respective first weeks of release. But the one we’re really excited about here at Popdust is the presence of our girl Carly Rae Jepsen at #38 with “Call Me Maybe.” Our office-wide crush on CarRaeJep and her signature song has grown and grown over the last month or two, and now we wish it only the highest of chart placements. Onwards and upwards, Carly.
