The Popdust Files: cee lo, the voice, Tony Vincent, tv recaps
Contestant Tony Vincent won a spot on Team Cee Lo on last night’s episode of The Voice, but Broadway and Green Day fans should have recognized him from his years on the Great White Way. Like last season’s Tarralyn Ramsey and Dia Frampton, expanding the field for previously established acts—something that shows like The X Factor are slowly moving towards—leads music competition show lovers to rediscover performers they may already be familiar with. Prior to impressing Mr. Green, Vincent made his Broadway debut in 1999 as Mark Cohen in Rent, and from there starred in the 2000 revival of Jesus Christ Superstar, We Will Rock You in London (2002) and Las Vegas (2005) and Green Day’s American Idiot in 2010. All of these roles have helped him carve a niche as the go-to rocker voice for more modern shows, and gives a clearer explanation as to why he’d chose “We Are The Champions” as his Voice audition song.
But before Broadway, the 38-year-old Vincent had a solo recording career with Star Song Records under EMI in Nashville, Tenn, releasing three albums from 1993 to 1997. With more than a modest following, and well-received roles in Tony nominated shows, makes it seem a bit strange that Vincent would put himself through what can be the tireless and unrewarding reality show grind. But there are always opportunities to reach new fans. His decision also speaks to the weight the names like Aguilera, Green, Levine and Shelton (and maybe even Daly?) associated with The Voice continue to carry in the entertainment world, as well as the network itself—even if the results of winning the show have yet to really be determined. Hey, Javier Colon! Check out Vincent’s prior work below.
