The Popdust Files: books, justin bieber
You know that feeling? The one where you’re looking at people a few years younger, maybe just starting college or high school or middle school or–no. We’re not extending this metaphor because it’s already a metaphor about feeling old and that would exacerbate things. Anyway. There are these younger-graders, and you notice two things. First, that they’re pipsqueaks who seem closer to infancy than whatever age you are, which in case you aren’t already starting to notice is really advanced. Second, that even the teeniest freshman has a resume twice his size that, if not culled, would stack itself book-high with plaudits and internships and awards and publications and recordings. And here you are, however many, many years old, plateaued someplace with an army of overly accomplished pre-adolescents storming your hill–a hill that’s starting to seem like it’s got the stability of an anthill or maybe a tiny house of cards.
In other news, Justin Bieber has a book coming out. He’s 17. It is his second book, despite its title being Justin Bieber: Just Getting Started and the last book being called First Step 2 Forever: My Story, which suggests Bieber’s taking these steps on the infinity staircase from The Phantom Tollbooth. (A staircase that leads to forever.) It’s a photo book following Bieber’s life on tour, which means he hasn’t written two 1000-word epics at age 17–how much writing he’s going to contribute is everyone’s easy guess–but nevertheless, it is a book, and it is his second. What have you done, or will you have done, by that age? Think on that. It’ll make it less scary when the book’s out in September and Bieber’s on to the next binderful of achievements.
