The Popdust Files: adam lambert, concerts, Queen
Time to start looking into transatlantic flights, Glamberts. All those who were prematurely excited by the reports that Adam Lambert would be stepping in as Queen’s new frontman should feel some vindication now that an upcoming live collaboration has been confirmed. In the midst of what will likely be heaving promotion for his upcoming album Trespassing, Lambert will take the stage with the band at the U.K.’s Sonisphere Festival on July 7, at the famous Knebworth House in Stevenage, where Freddie Mercury gave his final performance with the band in 1986. Queen’s Brian May and Roger Taylor verified the news on Monday, with Sonisphere representatives announcing fellow headliners Kiss and Faith No More, and additional acts Cypress Hill, Evanescence and Marilyn Manson to the three-day schedule. (See a full list of performers here.)
The band’s Saturday night slot will be the third time they’ve performed publicly with Lambert, following a 2009 collaboration on American Idol and the most recent MTV Europe Music Music Awards last November. Rumors earlier this month that the singer would potentially serve as Mercury’s replacement and front the band on their summer tour were ultimately clarified by Lambert himself, who said his quotes regarding the band were taken “outta context [sic]” during an interview. After weeks of speculation, Lambert took to Twitter himself to share news with fans:
As many suspected, I can finally confirm: I have been invited by Queen to sing one very special concert! Sonisphere at Knebworth July 7th!

Sorry to be coy about the details the past few weeks, but I made a promise to keep it under wraps as best I could. Gonna be a surreal night!

While many fans and media members have dubbed Lambert a fitting successor to the late Mercury, May and bandmates feel confident in their decision and believe it to be a move their former lead singer would support. “Judging by my incoming mail, this decision will make a lot of people very happy. It’s a worthy challenge for us, and I’m sure Adam would meet with Freddie’s approval,” he said in a statement. Tickets for the 2012 Sonisphere Festival go on sale February 23.
