Perhaps the most under-reported aspect of the recent death of Whitney Houston is this: Whitney was dating Ray J? That super-creepy 31-year-old (17 years Whit’s junior) R&B singer involved with the Kardashian sex tape, that VH1 reality show and a couple shitty R&B hits? We had no idea, and frankly, it makes our skin crawl a little for reasons we can’t even properly put into words. Still, as odd as their union may have seemed, we certainly feel for Ray J for the place he’s in now. The singer recently issued a statement to MTV News about Whitney’s death, breaking the radio silence he’s kept since last Saturday.

Over the past few days I’ve tried to process the emptiness that I am experiencing. What my heart feels cannot be expressed in words. The world lost an icon but I lost my close friend. Nippy I miss you so much! You were so happy and full of love. Your smile will live in my heart forever.

“Nippy,” for those curious, was a nickname of Whitney’s from her dad.

Not much to say here—we’re sure whatever the nature of their relationship, the hurting is very real and very crappy for Ray J right now. Hope he gets some peace on Saturday.
