The Popdust Files: concerts, covers, girls, i will always love you, whitney houston
All right, so we promise, we’re not gonna report it EVERY time someone we’ve written about at least once on this site covers Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You” over the course of the next few weeks—we don’t want to be clogging up The Internet or anything—but this was a good one. Girls, the indie rock/pop group led by ex-Children of God member Christopher Owens, covered Whit’s signature ballad at the Singapore edition of the Laneway festival (it’s a thing, trust us), with Owens doing the song as a solo guitar ballad, slow and understated. It’s quite the lovely and touching rendition, with many of the audience members getting inspired to sing along (especially on the chorus), and a couple even shouting out messages of support “WE LOVE YOU WHITNEY!!!” at appropriate moments.
One complaint, and you already know what it is: NO. KEY. CHANGE. Seriously, guys, have you ever even heard this song before? Would you cover “Free Bird” and sort of fade out before the guitar solo? Would you just strum a couple of times to represent the final orchestral swell of “A Day in the Life”? Child of God, please.
