The Popdust Files: grammys, maroon 5, reunions, rolling in the grammys, the beach boys
It’s been more than 20 years since the Beach Boys have performed together live. They’ve made one of the most acclaimed albums ever (Pet Sounds), and the Grammys are probably the biggest arena they could reunite at except maybe the Super Bowl, which kind of wouldn’t really fit. So they are, in fact, reuniting! At the Grammys! With Foster the People…! And Maroon 5. Oh joy. This might literally be what Justin Vernon was afraid of. It’s a “special performance,” according to the Grammy announcement, which means it’ll almost certainly be a tribute and not a more-harmonized “Moves Like Jagger” or something. And remember, team-ups like this are standard for the Grammy Awards. But still: the idea! It could work, but the thing is, Maroon 5′s strengths and the Beach Boys’ strengths are just so… incongruous. (Foster the People is the wild card here. Those psyched or upset about their inclusion have probably stopped reading this paragraph already.)
In news we can write about without the same reflexes kicking in, folk duo and Taylor Swift faves The Civil Wars are also slated to perform–no word on whether this is solo or a Swift duet on “Safe and Sound”–as are Diana Krall, funk musician Maceo Parker and rolling-in-Grammys Joe Walsh. And Common, Reba, Taraji P. Henson and Diana Ross(!) will present. Maybe they’ll present that “special performance.” Less than a week’s time will tell.
