Context is everything. If this video title said, oh, “Miguel,” or possibly “Ginuwine,” instead of “Antoine Dodson,” people would be going apeshit over it, and either the acoustic guitars or the pianos would probably make quite a few people invoke the term “old-school”–well, only as old-school as the ’90s, but still! (There’d also be approximately zero comments about autotune in the comments section if so, because seriously, has anyone listened to any song recorded after T-Pain? This isn’t blatant at all.) Antoine Dodson could totally have shopped this track around to working artists, and a lot of them could totally have recorded it.
In other words, “Lovesick Lullaby” is a real R&B track, not the viral novelty it’d be so easy for the “Bed Intruder” guy to make considering the last time we posted about him was bewigged at the Webbys. It’s even possible to listen to without being sketched out by an uncomfortable news story being turned into YouTube bait! If only every meme landed this gracefully.
