“Why is American Idol in Aspen?” a coworker asked just as I was subjecting her to the unmagical stylings of a certain non-Cyclops from last night. (I quickly borrowed headphones.) The reasons, dear readers, are numerous: scenery, outdoorsy authenticity, giving Ryan Seacrest the icy counterpart to his heat puns from Savannah’s auditions. And don’t the posh mountains of Colorado make any show seem instantly more sophisticated?

That’s not really how it turned out; last night’s episode of Idol was a return to form, which means lots of obvious gag contestants, more blatant mockery than before and about a 10-to-1 ratio of successful auditioners to successful auditioners who got more than 5 seconds of screen time. But these are the ultimate power rankings, so we’ll give every contestant exactly the amount of Web space they deserve, and their deserved ranking too. Think of it as the critiques that the episode lacked, without the constraint of an hourlong time slot. Critiquing auditioners! There’s a concept for a show.
