The Popdust Files: covers, heidi klum, seal, the ellen degeneres show

We understand if you need additional time to heal after learning Seal and Heidi Klum are the latest casualty in 2012′s marital bloodbath. The presumably happily married couple spent eight years maintaining a life of relative normalcy, popping out babies and hosting fabulous costume parties. So what went wrong? If they can’t make it, who can? Are we still allowed to listen to “Kiss From a Rose” and watch Project Runway? In an act of ironic serendipity or calculated PR, Seal stopped by The Ellen DeGeneres Show to promote new album Soul 2. The disc is a collection of popular covers from Marvin Gaye to Al Green, and he chose to perform the latter’s “Let’s Stay Together” for the daytime audience. Clearly a soul classic beloved by everyone from Popdust employees to President Obama, but it feels a little (icky? strange?) sad to watch him run across lyrics like “I wanna spend my whole life with you” just days after announcing his split from Frau Klum. That is, unless it’s one big publicity stunt. What does the saxophone player say?

Whatever additional meaning one wants to apply to this performance can arguably be countered by Seal’s confirmation that they do intend to go their separate ways. Specifically the explanation given to DeGeneres on why he still wears his wedding ring:

Yes I am still wearing my ring but I think that is pretty much a token of how I feel about this women. We have eight years, eight wonderful years together, and just because we have decided to separate doesn’t necessarily mean that you take off your ring and you’re no longer connected to that person. We will be connected in many ways till the rest of our lives, through our children and through this tremendous kind of admiration and respect and love we have for each other.

Aww. You kids can work it out, right? But if nothing else, live performances from this album—in that shirt—should help secure him a nice rebound.
