The Popdust Files: ladyhawke
Your pop primer of the day is on Ladyhawke, aka Pip Brown; her self-titled album is one of the underrated highlights of that electro-pop boomlet during the late ’00s, her album Anxiety‘s out soon, this single will apparently have quite the video, and without any more introductory ado, you can listen below.
There’s a lot going on in this track, isn’t there? The beginning, dressed in vintage crackle and fuzz, is representative of nothing; after a second, it recedes into an already-busy mix, each bit of percussion clicking and shuffling in place and every sound set to burst. Pip’s voice sounds rough and polished at once. And that’s before the chorus bursts even more with a melody like “Livin’ on a Prayer” and a backing that sounds like it’s been dipped in glitter and decked out in tinsel.
All this is probably deliberate; the lyrics are all along the lines of “it’s never easy when you’re alone” or “life inside your head has come undone,” and apparently the resulting chaos sounds like you’re caught in the eye of a parade. Can you listen to this on repeat without sensory overload? Probably not, but those first few listens are pretty striking.
