Lana Del Rey’s performance on SNL last weekend certainly has brought the haters out of the woodwork, hasn’t it? Idolator recently posted a roundup of reviews of LDR’s SNL gig, almost all of them resoundingly negative, and now, even news anchors from the same channel are throwing Lana under the bus. Brian Williams of NBC News recently e-mailed Gawker editor Nick Denton to jokingly chastise him for not posting enough on the weekends, and that included an implication that they missed the boat on not taking LDR to task for her SNL showing. Writes Williams:

I do wish the main page featured more TV coverage (Brooklyn hippster [sic] Lana Del Rey had one of the worst outings in SNL history last night — booked on the strength of her TWO SONG web EP, the least-experienced musical guest in the show’s history, for starters).

Burrrrrn. Well, the least-experienced thing is sorta hard to dispute—even if you count since-leaked songs like “The National Anthem” and “Born to Die,” you’re not gonna find too many SNL performers with tinier back catalogues than Lana—though calling her “one of the worst outings in SNL history” does belittle the show’s rich history of disastrous performances somewhat.

In any event, NBC did not appreciate Gawker’s posting of B-Dubs’ confidential LDR review, and wrote the site to ask them to take down his quote (in the interest of “maintaining the trust and respect we have for your site”). Gawker instead kept the post up, and added NBC’s e-mail as an addendum. Long live the A.J. Daulerio era.
