DJ Earworm’s “United States of Pop 2011″ Sums Up the Top 40 for Yet Another Year

It’s become one of the most important New Year’s traditions. The ball drops at Times Square, two major-market hockey teams play an overhyped game outdoors, and mashup maven DJ Earworm releases a “United State of Pop” mashup from the year’s 25 biggest hits. So 2012 brings us “World Go Boom,” Earworm’s 2011-summarizing mix featuring megahits by Britney, Nicki, Adele, Gaga, LMFAO, Bruno and a dozen or so others. As always, he uses a handful of songs as the mashup’s instrumental backbone—in this case, Britney’s “Till the World Ends,” Katy’s “Last Friday Night,” Gaga’s “Born This Way” and Rihanna’s “We Found Love”—while mixing in isolated phrases and musical passages from all corners of the Top 40.

We wouldn’t say this is Earworm’s finest mashup—it gets to be a little schizophrenic towards the end, and doesn’t quite compare to the golden standard he set with 2007 and 2009‘s efforts—but there are still moments, like the mid-song run on top of the “We Found Love” synth hook, and the clever late-song melding of the whistle hooks from “Pumped Up Kicks” and “Moves Like Jagger.” And at the very least, it’s still pure 2011 pop, a heady rush guaranteed to make your remember this year’s Top 40 even more fondly than however you already did. Well worth a listen or five.
