Katy Perry Chart Watch: Will “The One That Got Away” Get to #1?

As anybody who reads this site is hopefully all-too-well aware of by now, Katy Perry is on the verge of one of the great statistical accomplishments in Billboard history—a half-dozen #1 singles off the same album (Teenage Dream), if she can just get sixth single “The One That Got Away” over the hump. Last week, “The One” jumped from #9 to #4 on the charts, buoyed by slashing of the single prices on iTunes to well under a dollar, a maneuver that helped her get fifth single “Last Friday Night” to pole position over the summer. Now, she’s also repeated the “Last Friday Night” move of releasing a remix of the song featuring a famous guest rapper—in this case, Atlanta hitmaker B.o.B.
So how has her mechanizing served the song this week? Well, not fantastically so far—”The One” slipped from 4 to 5 on the charts this week, switching places with Flo Rida’s “Good Feeling.” The song continues to climb in airplay, moving from 6-5 on Radio Songs this week, but treads water in download sales, holding at #6 on the Digital Songs chart. Sales of the B.o.B. remix will help with that next week, as the remix version of the song is currently at #40 on the iTunes charts—about the same level of boost Katy got from the Missy Elliott “Last Friday Night” to get it to #1 but that was when Katy’s original version of “Friday” was still at #2 on iTunes. Right now, Katy’s original “One” has slipped to #7 on the iTunes charts, after making it as high as #4.
This is all a convoluted way of saying that, based on the evidence thusfar, Katy probably doesn’t have enough momentum to make the leap to #1 next week—especially with “We Found Love” and “Sexy And I Know It” holding strong in the top two—which would probably be her best chance of getting it at all. But that’s not to say we can close the book on that sixth #1 yet—the upcoming holiday season has a tendency to throw everything out of whack, and Katy and her EMI label have shown enough of a willingness to get creative in their stat-juking that they may have some tricks still left up their sleeves. And anyway, there’s no promise that six will be the magic number for Teenage Dream—they still have “Hummingbird Heartbeat” laying there as a potential seventh single, which sounds like more of a hit to us than “The One That Got Away” ever did, anyway.
We’ll have to stay posted, but for now, it seems like Katy’s ultimate Christmas gift might have to wait until at least New Year’s.
