The Popdust Files: adam lambert, Queen

Adam Lambert’s been compared to Freddie Mercury often enough, and his maximalist style owes a lot to Queen. And, more pertinently, he performed with Queen members Brian May and Roger Taylor at MTV’s EMAs last month. All of these count as qualifications to front Queen’s upcoming tribute tour in Mercury’s absence, right? Taylor thinks so. He told Billboard:

“He has grown into a really great performer with an astonishing voice with a range that’s great. We would like to work with him again. There’s nothing signed just yet but we’re talking about live dates. It could be very exciting.”

The standard caveat applies here: “talking about live dates” doesn’t mean “talking about live dates, and have already sliced and slaughtered all the bureaucracy and contractual obligations and scheduling logistics that stand in the way of live dates with artists of Queen and Adam Lambert’s stature.” And the last time we posted a frontperson-of-Queen story, it was about Lady Gaga, who is presumably busy with other things. Nevertheless, the EMA performance suggests it’s slightly more of a possibility this time. At the very least, it means you don’t have to speculate as to what he might sound like; if it happens, it’ll be a bit like this.
