The Popdust Files: fireball, nicki minaj, spoiler alert, video teasers, willow smith

With increasing frequency, artists are taking to social networks and premiering frustratingly brief teaser clips from their upcoming videos. These are usually between zero and 45 seconds in length and tend to do two things: leave you wanting more video, and leave you wanting fewer teasers. We can’t address the latter. What we can do, however, is help with the former, so, based solely on the preview, Popdust will miraculously predict what transpires in the unseen full-length video.

Today’s video teaser: Willow Smith and Nicki Minaj’s “Fireball.”

Run-length: 30 seconds

Summary: A massive fireball is about to collide with the world, as seen through blurry news broadcasts that give way to the best CGI fiery explosions that Willow Smith and her team could buy (so you’d imagine they’re pretty top-shelf CGI fiery explosions.) One of the newscasters says “There’s this huge, burning fireball, what’s going on…” with absolutely no inflection.

What could come next: We’d say “apocalypse,” but that’s so beginning-of-2011, and everyone involved seems to still be alive. We’d say “mass dance party,” considering that 99% of the lyrics consist of “I’m the fireball of the party,” but David Guetta did that already (come to think of it, he also did the apocalypse. Damn that apocalypse!) But there is one thing we think could happen. Those CGI fiery explosions couldn’t have cost even a millionth of Will Smith and co’s spending power. There must be more to come! We’re thinking fireballs shaped like Willow Smith and Nicki Minaj in full Nicki Minaj costume, fireballs that turn into fireworks, fireballs that actually make on-screen collisions with world landmarks, fireballs that multiply and become backup dancers. The possibilities for spectacle are endless! Even more so because it’s been practically an entire tenth of Willow’s life since we’ve had a video from her (we are kidding; she is not even 12 yet and doesn’t need to be working constantly and wearing herself out like Rihanna.) Fire up the fire, already.
