The Popdust Files: concerts, covers, goo goo dolls, johnny rzeznick, speak now, taylor swift, tours
After a slew of guest performers across the country and city-specific tributes, it’s likely that Taylor Swift’s final Speak Now dates will feature the most exciting cameos and unexpected covers. And ending the tour in New York City this week provides her with a bevy of hometown inspiration—would she be joined by Lady Gaga? Alicia Keys? The Strokes? Depends, are any of them from that sixth, oft-forgotten borough to the North—like, way, way North? On Monday’s first of two shows at Madison Square Garden, Swift was joined by Johnny Rzeznik of the Goo Goo Dolls, because Buffalo apparently counts as New York City now. Rzeznik and Swift teamed up on guitars to perform “Iris,” what she classifies as “one of the greatest songs ever written.” To be fair, the entire stadium sung along approvingly, which is proof of the song’s longevity, and an indicator that City of Angels might be on the TNT weekend loop again. But Popdust did hear one or two confused reactions from Swift’s youngest fans when Rzeznik popped up from thin air: “He’s like 40!” Perfect time for a bathroom break? Watch below.
