The Popdust Files: katy perry, saturday night light

Katy Perry will cap off her record-setting year by hosting Saturday Night Live on December 10, EMI announced on Monday. Fresh off her shining moment at last night’s American Music Awards, where she performed an acoustic “The One That Got Away“—a trend hers during recent award show performances—Perry will trade in her dramatic leanings of late for sketch comedy. Along with her penchant for alter egos in “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)” and voice work in this summer’s The Smurfs, Perry has the goofy, will-do-anything-to-be-liked-persona needed for a successful hosting gig. She’s also no stranger to Studio 8h, having served as musical guest in September 2010 following her Sesame Street controversy. Perry elected to make fun of those notable assets that made Elmo and Co. uncomfortable, proving that she’s willing to make herself the punchline, and there’s about a six year cycle for the inappropriate boobage joke around 30 Rock (see: Lindsay Lohan as Hermione in 2004).

The brief release didn’t specify if Perry would also be serving as musical guest, and thus joining the likes of Britney Spears, Jennifer Lopez, Ludacris, Justin Timberlake and Taylor Swift—yes, Ludacris hosted SNL. But if anything, a Russell Brand cameo is in the bag, right?
