The Popdust Files: aziz ansari, blades of glory, jay-z, kanye west, Ni--as In Paris, watch the throne, will ferrell

If Jay-Z and Kanye West’s latest live show has taught us anything over the last two weeks, it’s that audiences famous and non-famous alike really, really love “Ni–as In Paris,” a song that’s totally inescapable no matter how NSFW its title, or how random its Blades of Glory reference seems. For those non-movie buffs, the Watch The Throne track is preceded by audio from Will Ferrell and Jon Heder’s 2007 film, most notably, Ferrell’s insistence that, “We’re going to skate to one song and one song only.” What may confuse us plebeians obviously makes sense to Yeezy, who is apparently a huge fan, having compared himself to a Ferrell’s Anchorman character following the Taylor Swift VMA episode. Ferrell told MTV that the feeling is mutual: “Kanye reached out to me and I said, ‘Of course,’” Ferrell wrote via email. “I was completely flattered when they asked if they could sample me into the song … and when I heard it for the first time, I just started to laugh because it felt so surreal. But I really did like the song.” Of course he does—comedians love Watch The Throne! Just ask Aziz Ansari. “It makes me feel very good,” he explained. “And completely justified for buying a V-neck sweater made out of nothing but diamonds.”

Jay and ‘Ye have taken liberties with Ferrell’s follow up line during their live shows, telling the Watch The Throne crowds that, yes, “No one knows what it means!” Plans to film some video featuring Ferrell to be used during the live shows have been discussed, but have yet to materialize. Still, the actor has already begun brainstorming his future rap collaborations. “I think [something from] Step Brothers would be good [to use in a song],” he added. “Or the Woody Allen movie I did, Melinda and Melinda.” Yes! It’s making our head spin with how many activities they can do. What do you say, Lil Wayne?
