The Popdust Files: black keys, el camino, lonely boy

Is 24 hours enough exposure time to declare someone an internet celebrity? If not, we’re pretty confident that Derrick T. Tuggle will get there soon enough after his star-making turn in the video for the new Black Keys single “Lonely Boy.” The video has nearly 450,000 hits on YouTube already—at least 10,000 of which have come from inside the Popdust offices—and the song is slowly climbing the iTunes charts, currently perched at #70 after a day of release. It’s a very good song, but whatever success it gets, at least a small part is certainly due to Tuggle, whose hypnotic, endearingly amateurish dance routine brilliantly accentuates the song’s funky charms.

“I was cast as an extra, and there were maybe six or seven other people who were supposedly going to be in the video,” Tuggle explains to MTV News. ”The director just sort of noticed me dancing and asked me, ‘Can you perform?’ I said, ‘I can dance, anybody can dance,’” Tuggle went on to explain the influences that went into his insta-classic routine: “I took some moves from everybody: John Travolta from Saturday Night Fever and Pulp Fiction, the Carlton Banks dance from The Fresh Prince and a little bit of Michael Jackson, so it was a smorgasbord of everybody in there.” We think maybe it’s a little less Travolta and a little more Carlton, but if Tuggle says so, we’ll take him at his word.

As for who Tuggle himself is, he’s apparently a part-time security guard who has lived in LA for about a decade hoping to make it as an actor. He’s gotten spots as a background extra in videos for artists like Lenny Kravitz and Dave Matthews Band, but this is his first high-profile starring role. ”I’m elated, and I’m still in shock, to be honest,” said Tuggle. “I’ve been out [in Los Angeles] for 10 years, pursuing acting and music, so hopefully this will lead to more work…honestly, I just went down there to do my part and see what would happen. Who knew I would take over the whole thing?”

We do hope this is only the beginning for Tuggle, especially in his connection with the Black Keys. Too bad the VMAs are so many months away.

UO STUDENTS ORGANIZE MALLARD MADNESS EVENTS TO SHOWCASE ARTS AND CULTURE.

States News Service April 14, 2011 EUGENE, Ore. — The following information was released by the University of Oregon:

Students have worked together to create this year’s Mallard Madness-an annual event that showcases the arts and culture community on the University of Oregon campus.

Mallard Madness (MM) is a five-day event celebrating the arts and culture community on the UO campus from May 4 to May 6. With the tagline “Explore, Discover, Create,” MM will bring together 30,000 students and community members.

Mallard Madness is entirely run by students and is free to the public. Several campus groups planned a variety of events from film screenings to philanthropy to highlighting student work.

“The student organizers of Mallard Madness are showcasing all the arts and culture the UO has to offer, not only to students but to the community as well,” said Lex Chase, student organizer. “We want every student to feel like they are a Duck in any way that works for them.” Major events include the 2011 Willamette Valley Music Festival on Saturday, May 7, featuring international DJ A-Trak, Brooklyn indie outfit Yeasayer, beat distorter Baths, and up-and-coming hip-hop artist Donnis. Twenty acts across three stages will showcase a variety of genres and appeal to a wide-reaching audience. On Friday, May 6, campus radio station KWVA will host a birthday bash concert featuring international producer RJD2. In addition, UO student organizations will be highlighted throughout the day on the Quad Lawn in front of Knight Library.

From May 4 to May 7, more than 70 vendors and talent performers are the highlight of the twice-annual Street Faire running down 13th Avenue. Campus groups will perform each day at the EMU Amphitheatre and the indoor food area known as the “fish bowl.” The line-up includes nationally known a cappella group On the Rocks, as well as Mind the Gap, Divisi and the Jam Squad. In addition, the ramada by Friendly Hall will showcase the abilities of university students from the art department who will create interactive murals and graffiti art for the week.

“The UO is one of the only campuses nationally incorporating arts and culture to unify the student body,” said Geoff Nudelman, student organizer. “Our goal is to make Mallard Madness an annual event for the campus community for years to come.” In addition to Mallard Madness activities, campus will be busy the weekend of May 6 to May 8 hosting the Native American Student Union Pow Wow at MacArthur Court and the Many Nations Longhouse, and multiple athletic events at Hayward Field, Howe Field and the Matthew Knight Arena.
