American Idol winner Scotty McCreery sang the National Anthem at Game 1 of the World Series on Wednesday night. And as pop stars, marginal celebrities and civilians are wont to do during these high profile sporting events, he didn’t exactly deliver a perfect performance. Things started off rocky for Baby LockDemDoors as the sound system failed to pick up his voice on the first few lines, causing him to restart all together. The glitch and sudden need to improvise likely threw him off, as he can be heard flubbing the lyrics “Oh say can you see” to something sounding close to “No Jose,” which has spurned various conspiracy theories and angry postings that the 18-year-old was in fact using the Fall Classic stage as a venue for a political statement. Really? Do you think in between the Idol tour and Clear As Day promotion he’s had time to read up on immigration? If he has, mad props. We’d like to think poor Scotty just got a little flustered, or his molasses accent is so thick, that the general public’s plain ears can’t determine what he’s actually singing. To squash any anti-Scotty press before it starts, Universal Music has issued a statement on the performance: “We heard him sing the song live and have seen a taped version of his performance several times. He sang the lyrics correctly as they were written by Francis Scott Key. And we would bet most folks with a Southern accent would agree with us.” McCreery was followed by fellow country artist and Southerner, Trace Adkins, who gained positive reviews for his Game 2 rendition. Ronnie Dunn is on deck for Saturday’s Game 3, continuing baseball’s country love affair—this is a series between two teams from Middle America—with Zooey Deschanel and Demi Lovato scheduled for Game 4 and Game 5, the latter in Lovato’s home state of Texas. Fans shouldn’t be nervous at the prospects of a television actress tackling The Star Spangled Banner in the wake of Roseanne Barr‘s infamous 1990 performance, as Deschanel is the star of FOX’s The New Girl (cross-promotion!) and one half of the duo She & Him. Just don’t get too cute, Zooey! Baseball fans like their patriotic lyrics best sung in their original form.
