The Popdust Files: bob dylan, covers album, kesha, upcoming albums

Ke$ha’s affection for her rock and roll forefathers is well established, whether she’s doing charity work with Iggy Pop, dueting with Alice Cooper or citing Mick Jagger as her standard for male studliness. Still, Bob Dylan is not an obvious influence on K-Money—there’s not much about the legendary singer/songwriter that’s in any way evocative of dingy nightclubs, strobe lights or whiskey teethbrushing. (He even somehow avoided making a disco record in the late ’70s—as far as we know, anyway—when even the freakin’ Beach Boys were hitting the dancefloor). She’s cited his Nashville Skyline as a favorite, but while it’s one thing to break up your party soundtrack with a little Sunday Mornin’ Comin’ Down music, it’s another to make it part of your recording repertoire.

Yet here we are, with Rolling Stone announcing an upcoming Amnesty International tribute album to RobZim, Chimes of Freedom. The covers disc is mostly populated by the usual suspects, including Adele doing “To Make You Feel My Love” (of course), Patti Smith taking on “Drifter’s Escape” (she was available??) and My Morning Jacket covering “You’re a Big Girl Now” (YOU MEAN MMJ LIKE OLD ROCK STUFF???) But then, the curveball—Kesha Rose Sebert giving 1962′s “Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right,” that most singer-songwriteriest of Dylan tunes, a workout. Where the hell’s the glitter in that?

Regardless of how it ends up—and we really, really hope it’s not Ke$ha just showing us that we should take her seriously as a singer and sensitive human person—we appreciate the Dollar-Signed One giving us a reason to give a shit about this upcoming cover album. Lord knows that Sting and the Dave Matthews Band weren’t gonna get the job done on that front.

[Oh No They Didn't!]
