The Popdust Files: albums, katy perry, mtv, teenage dream, tricky stewart

In today’s Top 40, disappearing from the charts for even a few months can do irreparable damage to an artist’s career, while all the true workaholic pop stars continue to crank out a seemingly endless stream of new music, leaving them in the dust in the process. So it’s no surprise that even as Katy Perry preps “The One That Got Away,” her new single off Teenage Dream—the album’s sixth, for those of you keeping score at home—she should also be back in the studio, getting ready for What Happens Next in her post-Dream career.

Producer Tricky Stewart, who helmed three of the album’s tracks (though none of the singles), talked to MTV about the work he and Katy are doing now. “Katy and I went into [the studio] just to address some issues with records that we had done in the past that didn’t end up going on Teenage Dream,” said Stewart. “So we are in the process of just listening and freshening up things and getting ready for something special she has going on.” As for what that “something special” is, no one seems to know yet for certain. “I don’t know what it is, but I know she has something going on because she wants to be in the studio,” he said. “So that’s good. … I can tell you that Katy likes the studio again; that’s always a good thing.” (Stewart also mentioned “Dressing Up” as one of the songs worked on, which he called “a big record…right there in what her sensibilities are as a musician and a songwriter.”)

Well, Katy’s already released a deluxe edition reissue for Teenage Dream—over a year ago, in fact—but we haven’t seen anything about a super-deluxe edition just yet. It might be time, we’re thinking.
