The Popdust Files: black eyed peas, christina aguilera, michael jackson, Michael Jackson tribute concert, tribute concerts
It’s a tough life, being a Black Eyed Peas fan. You’ve already got to face the derision of roughly the entire country. You’ve got to put up with songs like “My Humps” and lengthy Dirty Dancing remakes and wonder what songwriters really think of you. And every concert you plan on attending has even chances of getting canceled. First, the summer rain decided it was more important than whatever brought fans to Central Park. Now, the Peas’ appearance at the Michael Forever tribute concert on Saturday will not in fact be an appearance; the group pulled out thanks to nebulous “unavoidable circumstances.”
OK, now the paragraph that doesn’t assume you’re a massive Black Eyed Peas fan. This can’t be any more of a blow to the concert–especially on this short notice–than anything else that’s happened. Reuters seems to think the Peas were among the biggest draws, which might be true if you forget Cee-Lo Green, Christina Aguilera, Gladys Knight, freaking Smokey Robinson and everyone named Jackson who isn’t against this thing happening at all. But then again, BBC called Pixie Lott one of the “next generation of Jacksons” (no, not the literal next generation). And the genuine connection will.i.am has with Jackson–yes, it does seem genuine–may or may not have translated into a worthy tribute anyway. Net loss here: maybe 50 stans and a lots of lasers? Statistically, that’s almost nothing for anything with Michael Jackson’s scope. The show will go on.
