Adele’s sudden stardom is thanks to lots of factors, at least 12 of which involve “Rolling in the Deep,” but it’s probably not thanks to her music videos. Can you even say much about the video from memory without being a superfan? (As for our memory, it involves broken glass and singing.) Adele did score a nomination at the VMAs for Video of the Year, but you suspect it was for the song more than the video proper, and she lost out to a Katy Perry video full of spectacle and shooting sparks.
No surprise, then, that the 10-or-so seconds of Adele’s video for “Someone Like You” previewed on Access Hollywood are simple: walk down a path with scenery behind you, look moody. Of course, the song’s understated enough that any splashy video treatment would be out of place. And this preview is of the verse, the quietest part of the entire song. Really, the only mild surprise is this quote from Idolator from director Jake Nava on filming: “Shooting early in the morning allows you to focus on Adele in this lonely and emotional space.” Bet that’s what he told the crew members at 4 a.m.
The full video airs tomorrow on MTV. Watch the preview below:
