The Popdust Files: MTV Europe Music Awards, selena gomez

Selena Gomez apparently didn’t take our advice when we suggested she punt any future hosting invitations to the Bieb. Gomez was far from the worst thing about MTV’s Video Music Awards–the worst things about the VMAs were famous for reality shows or Friday–but she seemed overwhelmed at the prospect of corralling all the red-carpet chaos during the preshow she hosted.

That said, Gomez does have preternatural poise, which probably helped her get her gig hosting MTV’s Europe Music Awards, held November 6 in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Her tasks: host the show, tweet about it and update the website; according to the Hollywood Reporter, she’ll also be “managing a multitude of costume and set changes.” So in other words, she’s a host, stage manager, Web editor and Twitter jockey! That’s quite the bill of responsibilities for a 19-year-old. Jeez. We rescind all our rights to criticize her for this; it’s a big enough task just to host the thing.

As for the nominations, Lady Gaga has six, Katy Perry and Bruno Mars both have four, and Adele, Justin Bieber and Thirty Seconds to Mars have three each. Two-time nominees include Foo Fighters, Snoop Dogg, My Chemical Romance, Jennifer Lopez, LMFAO, Jessie J, Beyoncé, Coldplay, Eminem, Arcade Fire, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Far East Movement, Kanye West, Linkin Park, Wiz Khalifa, and Kings of Leon. As for Gomez, she has one nomination, for Biggest Fans. Maybe next year, if her multiplatform gauntlet goes OK, her surprisingly solid music might get a signal boost here?
