The Popdust Files: glee, justin bieber, sesame street
He’s only a few years removed from Sesame Street‘s target audience, yet Justin Bieber will soon have his very own felt likeness entertaining and educating children on weekday mornings. He’s been bronzed and waxed, so obviously the next logical step in The Bieber Conservation Project is to create a puppet clone of the 17-year-old Canadian. Sesame Street will feature its own version of Bieber and his hit song “Never Say Never” for the show’s 42nd season, debuting on September 26. In the clip embedded below, The Bieb’s neighborhood alter ego sports familiar hair and accessories while meeting up with the one and only Elmo—celebrity sighting!—to sing about the merits of calculation on the track “Measure, Yeah, Measure.” We’re guilty of more than one listen, even if the PBS daytime stalwart is being awfully generous with puppet JB’s voice—much, much deeper than you’re used to. Despite what Will and Jada might say, Elmo is an adequate replacement for Jaden Smith, making us wish once again that we were a child of the aughts or early ’10s. Here’s hoping this is the way to get American kids to finally learn the metric system.
And because this season—just like every other one?—will focus on school “readiness,” the program has a nod to FOX’s Glee lined up as well. Add it to the list. Sesame‘s spoof features the “G-Club” and their quest for “G-Regionals,” with spot-on versions of Rachel, Mr. Schuester and Sue Sylvester—all with names that start with the same letter, of course. Just like the Kardashian family! The new crew even breaks into a version of Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin,” which is when the cuteness starts to become confusing. Aside from those of us who ride the G train, who knew that G was such important letter to learn? We would have gone with Q, personally.
