"The Sing-Off" Winner Committed Debuts "Break Free" Video

You might remember Committed for their renditions of Usher tunes, which hit melodies that had judge Shawn Stockman near a point of ecstasy, or for their home grown Christian morals and sweet personalities that brought Nicole Scherzinger to tears. After winning season two of The Sing-Off last year, the Alabaman sextet scored a record deal with Sony and dropped their debut album today, said to be a mix of covers and original songs. In their first music video for “Break Free,” the a cappella group delivers their vocals while sitting on an assortment of your grandmother’s antiques in the middle of the woods, with zero explanation as to where their electricity comes from. (Their voices, natch.) While their self-made sound is the most notable element in their music, and the entire point of the show that launched them to temporary pseudo-stardom, they’ve downplay performance sequences that show them producing their own instrumentation in favor of sexy stares across the ocean, a tired trend that artists who want to seem poignant insist on using. While the facial expressions that come with beat boxing may not be sexy, we’d much rather see the group performing their own vocal percussion rather than a scene that could be taken from any other video on MTV Hits, or at the very worse, The Hills.
But with The Sing-Off returning for a full season on September 19, don’t you want to prove your musical superiority to others, even if it’s just your DVR Theodore, by knowing what last year’s winners are up to? Yes, this is a video from an a cappella group that won a reality show. But considering the other excuses for music that have surfaced today, at least it’s good. Watch and learn, Kim K.
