Too much cool for one festival stage. During the Strokes’ set at the Reading Festival this weekend, they welcomed a special guest out to join them—Jarvis Cocker (“The Jarv,” as Strokes frontman Julian Casablancas coyly introduced him), lead singer of UK britpop titans Pulp. Together, they covered “Just What I Needed,” the most famous song by The Strokes’ new wave predecessors in sunglasses-wearing cool, The Cars. It was a bit rough going at first, since Casablancas got his initial cue wrong several times and then fudged the words to the first verse (and c’mon, what self-respecting cool-guy rocker doesn’t know all the words to the first verse of “Just What I Needed”?) but from there, the whole thing is pretty ice cold. Next time: Blondie’s “Hanging on the Telephone,” maybe?
