Adam Levine to MTV: “F— You, VMAs”

The Popdust Files: live from the vmas, maroon 5

It’s been four years since Maroon 5 were nominated for an MTV Video Music Award, losing Best Group to Fall Out Boy in 2007, and seven years since they won one, taking home Best New Artist for “This Love” in 2004. Could this have anything to do with why M5 frontman Adam Levine is now responding to the VMAs like a spurned lover? Perhaps, perhaps not, but in any event, Levine now claims he wants nothing to do with the award show. “the VMA’s. one day a year when MTV pretends to still care about music,” Levine tweeted last night. “I’m drawing a line in the sand. fuck you VMA’s.”

Not a Derek Jeter/Lyla Garrity-sized breakup perhaps, but with Levine having a bit of a moment in 2011, re-established as a pop culture factor through The Voice and “Moves Like Jagger,” Maroon 5′s first top five hit in nearly half a decade, it’s a minorly noteworthy rebellion. “i may be a pop singer. but every once in a while the angsty teenager in me just blurts out some raw honesty,” tweeted Levine later. “it’s a reflex.” Real talk.
