The Popdust Files: covers, kelly rowland, motivation, ne-yo
Looks like the Year of the Gentleman is now officially over. Ne-Yo recently released “She Uses Me (Masturbation),” a spin off Kelly Rowland’s recent comeback hit “Motivation,” in which the singer describes a masturbation fantasy—not his own, but one in which he nonetheless plays a large role. “She rubbing lotion on her body / Pretending that her hands are mine,” he sings, in full Terius Nash mode, eventually getting to the dénouement: “She use me as part of her masturbation.” Lesson learned: You give your song a one-word, four-syllable title that starts with the letter “M,” you really leave yourself open to such alternative renditions.
Still, cool to see so many rappers and singers going in on the Rowland track, one of the year’s more sneakily seductive R&B hits. And be sure to look out for more of the same coming shortly from Ne-Yo, as he becomes the latest R&B singer to throw his hat into the mixtape circuit. (Bad metaphor, actually—you couldn’t get that thing off Ne-Yo’s head with a pair of pliers and a blowtorch.)
