The Popdust Files: charts, Dr. Luke, katy perry, last friday night (t.g.i.f.), Perez Hilton

“She did it!!!” proclaimed Perez Hilton in an article on Katy Perry last night. Perez is, of course, referring to Katy reaching #1 on the Hot 100 this week with “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.),” the fifth single off Teenage Dream to reach pole position on the chart, a feat that, as Perez points out, was accomplished previously only by Michael Jackson, with 1987′s Bad. “Congratulations, Katy!!!!” wrote Hilton. “We’re SO impressed and excited for you!!!!” An excited Dr. Luke, writer and producer not only on “Last Friday Night” but on every Teenage Dream single except “Firework,” even tweeted a link to Perez’s article, saying “congrats!!!! @katyperry more to come!!!”

Except she didn’t really do it at all—”Last Friday Night” is actually still at #2 this week on the Hot 100 behind LMFAO’s “Party Rock Anthem,” incredibly celebrating its fifth week in the top spot. What “Last Friday Night” did do was move to #1 on the confusingly-named Pop Songs chart, also known as the Mainstream Top 40, which is different from the Hot 100 because it only measures mainstream airplay and does not factor in sales. Now, that’s still a historic accomplishment, as that marks Katy’s fifth #1 single on the Pop Songs chart, breaking the previous record of four for one album, shared by Justin Timberlake’s FutureSex/LoveSounds and Lady Gaga’s The Fame. But it’s not the accomplishment that chart geeks have been waiting on, and it’s not the one that Perez is talking about—the Pop Songs chart didn’t even exist when Michael Jackson released Bad.

Better men than Perez have been thrown by the difference between the Pop Songs chart and the Hot 100, so we’ll let him off fairly easy. But Dr. Luke? The guy who should be spending ten hours a week poring over his copy of Billboard to calculate just how thorough his dominance over the pop landscape is? For shame, Mr. Gottwald. And now if Katy doesn’t ever end up getting that 5th #1, the two of you are clearly to blame for jinxing her.
