The Popdust Files: blink 182

To thank their loyal fans who’ve stuck with the band through a potential break-up, the arrival of Hoppus On Music and a lack of any new music since 2005, Blink-182 is giving back to their supporters in the new video for “Up All Night.” The guys teamed up with AT&T to create a compilation of clips uploaded to YouTube, which include music used without the band’s permission—so much for consequences. Along with many self-made performance sequences are shots capturing the number of online views rapidly rising, in the vein of Google Chrome ads featuring Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga, and a subtle pat on the back to the band members themselves. They’re not going to totally stay out of the spotlight.

It appears videos like this are becoming a trend: Beyoncé announced her plan for a new version of “Best Thing I Never Had,” comprised entirely of fan submitted clips and photos jut last week, which signifies sincere fan appreciation, tighter production budgets or general laziness on the part of the artists themselves. Regardless, if you spend all of your time on the Internet making tribute videos that may illegally rip off songs from your favorite artists—in the name of devotion, of course—one day, you too could be rewarded with 15 seconds of viral fame. Blink fans: See if you can spot your work in the video below.
