The Popdust Files: concert announcement, Controversy, jacksons, michael jackson

It’s never too late to pay tribute to the greatest pop star of all time, is it? A little more than two years after the shocking death of Michael Jackson, the Jackson Family, many of whom are pop royalty in their own right, are now planning a tribute concert for Michael. The concert is to take place at the 75,000-person capacity Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, Wales on October 8th, with a yet-to-be-announced cast of alleged celebrity guest performers. “When I was told some of the names of the artists performing, I knew it would be fit for a king,” said mother Katherine. Offered sister LaToya, “It is intended to be the biggest and best concert in the world for many years to come…This tribute will be something spectacular and I know that he would approve.”

Family PR quotes aside, we can’t help but be the tiniest bit skeptical of the concert’s purported largesse. Not only is the lack of announced guests troubling, but the failure of the family’s most high-profile members to show up at the actual conference—Marlon, Jackie, Tito, LaToya and Katherine were there, but not Joe, Jermaine, Randy or Janet—is hardly encouraging. Jermaine and Randy have even voiced their objections to the event, stating that “we find it impossible to support an event that is due to take place during the criminal trial surrounding Michael’s death.” (The Conrad Murray trial starts Sept. 20th, and will no doubt still be underway at the time of the concert.)

All that said, we hate to doubt the word of LaToya Jackson—she’s never let us down yet—so we’re giving the family the benefit of the doubt for now. We’ll keep you posted as more details emerge about the concert, to let you know whether it’s worth making the road trip to Britannia.
