The Popdust Files: demi lovato, music videos, skyscraper

The reveal of Demi Lovato’s “Skyscraper” single and marginalia is still happening super-fast, like it’s a skyscraper built on SimCity’s lighting-speed mode. Today, we’ve got a rip of the video! And if you’ve seen the album cover or teaser, you know almost exactly what you’re in for! Watch about 5/6 of it (sorry; wait a few hours and the whole thing will undoubtedly be everywhere) below:

It’s all very minimal, isn’t it? But it has to be. “Skyscraper” is a confrontational song, hence the super-close camera angles–it’s like she’s singing straight at you! It’s all about ethereal, metaphorical personal growth, which is why it looks like a Sarah Brightman photo shoot in even softer focus, has broken glass that looks pretty more than dangerous, and is set on a non-touristy beach. (Or that could be the rip quality, because y’know.) And “Skyscraper” likely didn’t have a Big Event Video Budget, so this really just involved going to the beach with a camera and some props.

Let us be really clear, though: none of this is bad. Demi wants us to focus on her singing and struggle, and a splashy, jerky video would distract from that. The video’s very moving, and it obviously moved her as well. If it moves others still, it’s done its job.
