Despite being voted off the American Idol stage back on that cold, cruel day in early April, 22-year-old Pia Toscano has been rewarded for her gratuitous smiles and obligatory television appearances with a solo record deal from Jimmy Iovine’s Interscope Records. But that’s not all! The New York native also has a debut single lined up, crafted by hit-maker Ester Dean (who has written for female heroes like Beyoncé, Rihanna and Nicki Minaj). Both professional gifts make it clear that although she finished ninth, to the music suits, Toscano is the (brunette) big-haired, big-voiced answer to country-loving finalists Lauren Alaina and Scotty McCreery. Which is why we can sympathize with her line of thinking: with all of these staunch supporters chanting her name in unison (even if they were just in her head), why shouldn’t she give the people what they want? On Wednesday night, Toscano treated fans—or, those who bought tickets to the opening show of Idols LIVE! in West Valley City, Utah—to “This Time,” six days before its official release. This move would feel like a delicately crafted escape from the rote workings of the Idol machine, if it weren’t so obviously calculated as a way to continue Pia’s PR campaign just one day after her record deal was announced. But, we digress. “This Time” is a power pop song to inspire all those who have been kept down, whether it be by a significant other, a boss or a reality competition show. So if you, like Pia, “won’t take it no more,” go ahead and watch her debut performance of the track below. Just don’t lose that underdog spirit, P! We see many a “triumph against all odds” empowerment jam in your future.
