The Popdust Files: auction, michael jackson, thriller

“It is one of the most important pieces of rock’n'roll memorabilia in history,” said trader Milton Verret of the famous red leather jacket that Michael Jackson wore in the “Thriller” video. And now, the memories are all Verret’s, as he purchased the jacket for a whopping $1.8 million, in an auction that took place on the second anniversary of the legendary pop star’s death. Despite an anticipated price tag of somewhere between $200,000-$400,00, a half-dozen other worldwide bidders got the final sale to nearly $2 million, before the “controversial” commodities trader won out. The jacket will subsequently be used as a fundraising tool, being brought out on tour with profits going to various childrens’ charities.

While our expense budget here at Popdust couldn’t quite allow for us to enter the bidding—though damn, jacket would’ve looked nice mounted on the far wall in our office—there are some other MJ-worn video garments we’d still love to get our hands on, so let us know if you have any leads on ‘em:

  • Studded leather glove from “Bad”
  • Bowtie from “Billie Jean”
  • Sequined shirt and pants from “Rock With You” (maybe check with Nick Cannon)
  • White fedora from “Smooth Criminal”
  • Towel from “You Are Not Alone” video (Probably available at a very, very reasonable price)

Thanks. No finders fees or anything, but hopefully the virtue of hooking up your favorite pop site with such priceless pop memorabilia will be its own reward.
