The Popdust Files: bet awards, chris brown, drake, rihanna

Chris Brown was a busy man at Sunday’s BET Awards. Breezy led all artists with six nominations and took the stage twice to perform his own medley (“She Ain’t You,” “Look At Me Now” with Busta Rhymes and “Paper, Scissors, Rock”) and assist Big Sean on the Popdust Summer Jam “My Last.” In a night that was full of ridiculous spoofs like The Real Husbands of Hollywood starring host Kevin Hart and Bobby Brown, things took a turn for the uncomfortable during the presentation of the Coca-Cola Viewers’ Choice Award. Contest winner–and self-proclaimed world’s biggest Nicki Minaj fan—Tiffany Green was given the honors of announcing the winner, reading the name off a HTC evo tablet 4G (technology!). But when the time arrived, Green appeared confused over who had actually won, first announcing Brown’s “Look At Me Now” from her tablet, before  correcting herself and saying it belonged to Rihanna and Drake’s “What’s My Name.” Was this all a stunt to get Breezy fuming at BET producers? (And a chance to use our apology letter?) Rihanna wasn’t even in the building—which squashed the potential for any conjured drama—so Drake reluctantly accepted the awkward, noting that the whole scenario was indeed “awkward.” BET later tweeted that Chris Brown was actually the recipient, giving him four total wins on the night, while poor Green was likely receiving death threats from enraged Breezy fans. (All dressed up only to embarrass herself in front of her idols is pretty much the equivalent of the naked in the cafeteria dream, right?) Network executive Stephen G. Hill accepted full responsibility for the gaffe, citing “human error.” “That BET Awards Viewer’s Choice [sic] mix-up was due to human error,” he tweeted shortly after the awards show. “And I was the human that made that error. I apologize to ALL affected.” Let this be a lesson to all TV networks: product placements can steer you wrong.
